Sari 2023 – Review:-
Love at first sight is a concept that many films have explored in the past and Sari begins with the same idea at its core. In the recent past, Marathi films like Ved and Circuit have been remade from south Indian films (Majili and Kali, respectively). Sari joins the list. A remake of the Kannada film Dia (which was also remade in Hindi as Dear Dia), Sari is directed by K S Ashoka who has directed the other two versions as well. The film is essentially a love story revolving around Dia (Ritika Shrotri), Rohit (Ajinkya Raut) and Adi (Pruthvee Ambaar). Sari opens with a scene where Dia is attempting suicide on the railway tracks. Once the premise of a tragedy is established, the movie goes into flashback and shows us glimpses from Dia’s life. Dia falls for Rohit the moment she sees him in college. However, she never confesses her love. One day, Rohit leaves the college to move abroad and Dia is shattered. Time goes by and Dia moves on with her life only for Rohit to make a re-entry in her life. Rohit has moved into the building that Dia stays in. The two meet in the building’s elevator and Rohit initiates a conversation. They strike a friendship that turns into love gradually. But life has other plans. The two meet with an accident which leaves Dia seriously injured. While she survives, Dia’s parents tell her that Rohit is no more. To facilitate her recovery, Dia’s parents move her to Pune where she meets Adi. It takes time, but the two bond and fall in love. But, there’s another twist in the tale. What it is and how the story unfolds is what the film shows. While the story is impactful, its translation into a film isn’t as good. There are loopholes in the plot and many times, the film seems overdramatic. Multiple tragedies in the film hamper the flow and makes it seem as if there’s nothing beyond tragedies in the life of Dia. As for the acting, Ajinkya Raut makes a sincere debut but doesn’t look natural on the big screen. Ritika does a fine job and carries the emotional scenes well on her shoulders. Pruthvee, who has essayed this role in the Kannada and Hindi versions before, is on point as Adi and stands out with his performance. But that alone isn’t enough to help this film sail through. Sari doesn’t remind you of the fact that life is unpredictable, but beyond that, it doesn’t do much. That said, if you’re a fan of the genre, you might want to give this one a watch.
